Course explores foundational Soviet film theory and the key films associated with the era. Includes major theoretical statements on paper and celluloid by figures such as Lev Kuleshov, Dziga Vertov, Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevelod Pudovkin, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Sergei Parajanov. Concepts covered include montage, kino-eye, film language, formalism, dialectics, and poetic cinema. Course is open to undergraduates and graduate students and will include film screenings. All readings available in English translation.
