We are deeply saddened to share the news that our dear colleague Margaret Alexiou, George Seferis Professor of Modern Greek Studies and Professor of Comparative Literature, Emerita, passed away in her home in England last week, on September 16, 2026.

One of the most impactful, insightful, and generous Neohellenists of the last fifty years, Meg educated three generations of scholars in Modern Greek Studies and related fields. Her studies in Byzantine and Modern Greek literature and cultures (most notably her magisterial The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition and After Antiquity: Greek Language, Myth, and Metaphor) opened up new research areas and put forward innovative hermeneutic perspectives.
